Salt Air Corrosion on Outdoor Outlets: What to Do

Why does salt air corrode outdoor outlets?

An affected outlet may stop working, trip its GFCI, heat under load, or arc.

Turn off the circuit and stop using an outlet that is warm, cracked, buzzing, sparking, loose, blackened, or visibly green or rusty. Do not keep resetting a GFCI that trips again, and do not spray cleaner into an energized device. Smoke, flame, or a burning odor calls for immediate distance from the area and emergency help when there is active danger.

Floodwater is a separate level of exposure. If a receptacle, box, splice, or cable end was submerged, leave the circuit off until it is evaluated. Should you clean or replace a corroded outlet?

Replace a receptacle when corrosion reaches its contacts, terminals, mounting strap, or internal mechanism. These parts are inexpensive compared with the risk of an unreliable connection, and field cleaning does not recreate the device's original contact pressure or finish.
