Balayage is hand-painted directly onto the hair, so the lightened sections are placed freehand and blend gradually into your natural colour. That is why it grows out soft, with no hard line at the root. Highlights (and lowlights) are foiled, section by section, which gives more even, defined dimension throughout the head. Full colour changes your entire base shade, root to end, and is the only one of the three that fully replaces your starting colour.
None of the three is objectively better. Balayage suits clients who want lower-maintenance regrowth and a natural gradient. Foiled highlights suit clients who want brighter, more uniform dimension and do not mind a more defined regrowth line. Full colour suits clients covering gray, going noticeably lighter or darker, or correcting a tone they no longer want.
How do you decide which one to book?
Start with how much upkeep you want. If you would rather stretch the time between salon visits, balayage's soft grow-out is the easier choice. If you want maximum brightness and do not mind booking more regularly, foiled highlights deliver more even contrast. If your goal is to change your overall shade or cover gray completely, full colour is the one that actually does that job.
It is also common to combine techniques, for example lowlights added to a balayage for depth, or a gloss over highlights to even the tone. Bring reference photos to your consultation; they help a colourist translate what you like about an image into a technique that will actually work on your hair.
