A shore home needs a sump pump when groundwater or runoff predictably enters a below-grade crawlspace, basement, or utility area and can be collected in a properly built basin. It manages water after entry, so grading, drainage, foundation openings, and plumbing leaks still need diagnosis.

High water tables, sandy soil, low elevations, and coastal storms make shore properties vulnerable. A sump pump is appropriate only when the water source and discharge route are understood.
