The black streaks on your roof are a living organism, and it can be removed without walking granules off your shingles.
Those dark runs down a roof are gloeocapsa magma, a hardy algae that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It spreads downhill with the rain, which is why the streaking always runs vertically.
It cannot be pressure-washed off safely. The granule layer is what protects the asphalt from UV, and high pressure strips it, taking years off the roof to fix a cosmetic problem. Soft washing kills the organism in place and lets the weather rinse the residue away over the following weeks.

Application is done from the edge wherever possible. Less foot traffic on a roof is always better for it.
Everything below the roofline gets rinsed so nothing is left to stain siding or planting.
Low-pressure cleaning is the method shingle manufacturers generally point to for algae removal, precisely because pressure washing is what damages the granule layer. Check your own warranty terms.
Some staining lifts over the following few weeks as rain rinses the dead growth away. That is normal and expected on heavy lichen.
We avoid heavy rain and high wind. Overcast and still is close to ideal.
