Hardscape at the shore succeeds or fails on the base. Sandy ground moves, and a patio laid on an under-compacted base will settle unevenly within a couple of seasons no matter how good the pavers are.
The visible half is design: sizing a patio for the furniture that will actually go on it, setting levels so water runs away from the house, and choosing materials that will not cook underfoot in August.

2. Excavate and compact
The base is dug to depth and compacted in lifts. This is the part that decides whether it stays flat.
3. Lay, cut and lock
Pavers laid to the pattern, edges restrained, joints filled and compacted.
Common questions
Why does the base need to be so deep?
Sandy ground moves more than clay. The base is what spreads the load and stops differential settlement.
Will the joints grow weeds?
Polymeric joint sand suppresses most of it. Anything that does seed in comes out easily because it is rooting in sand.
Can you match my existing patio?
Often, though older pavers weather and exact colour matches are rare. We will show you the closest option before ordering.
