Tree and shrub care

Pruning and health care for the woody plants that give a shore property its structure and its shelter.

Woody plants are the most expensive things in most landscapes and the slowest to replace, which makes them the worst place to guess. Pruning at the wrong time removes next year's flowers; pruning badly leaves wounds that do not close.

At the shore they are also doing a job beyond looking good. Trees and large shrubs are the windbreak everything else depends on, so their health decides what is possible in the beds behind them.

What the service includes

  • Structural and maintenance pruning timed to the species
  • Deadwood removal and crown thinning
  • Salt and wind damage assessment
  • Disease and pest identification with a treatment plan
  • Deep-root feeding where the soil warrants it

How the work runs

1. Identify and assess

Species, condition and what the plant is doing for the site, before deciding what to cut.

2. Prune to the plant

Cuts made at the right point and the right season for that species, not to a uniform shape.

3. Monitor

Anything we are watching gets flagged to you so it is caught while it is still cheap.

Common questions

When should hydrangeas be pruned?

It depends entirely on the type, because some flower on old wood and some on new. Cutting the wrong one in spring removes the whole season's bloom.

My shrubs are brown on one side only.

That is the classic signature of salt-laden wind. It is usually survivable, and the fix is shelter rather than replacement.

Do you take down trees?

Not large removals. We prune and maintain, and will refer you for anything that needs a climbing crew.
